Why Professional Palm Tree Trimming Matters

Hurricane Readiness
Properly cleaned palms shed wind and falling debris better - lowering the risk of frond shrapnel and trunk failure during tropical storms
Stronger, Healthier Palms
Removing only fully brown fronds preserves the green canopy palms need to fuel growth and resist potassium & manganese deficiency
No Hurricane Cuts
Over-pruned 'pineapple cut' palms develop pencil-pointed trunks and become more vulnerable to disease, sun damage, and storm failure

ISA-Standard Palm Tree Trimming in Palm Beach & Martin Counties

Palm trees are not regular trees - and most damage to them is self-inflicted. The 'hurricane cut' (also called the 'pineapple cut' or 'Mohawk cut') is one of the most common - and most harmful - mistakes in South Florida palm care. Stripping a palm down to only the upright fronds removes the photosynthetic capacity it needs to fuel growth, accelerates potassium and manganese deficiency, causes the trunk to 'pencil-point' (narrow dangerously), and exposes the apical bud to sun, wind, and pathogens. At ArborCentric Solutions, every palm cut follows the ISA-recommended 9-and-3 rule - only fronds at or below the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock horizontal line are removed.

Robert Castleberry, ISA Certified Arborist (#FL-6022A), holds the FL ISA PPQ specialty credential - an advanced qualification most tree companies in South Florida don't have. Every palm consultation includes a check for lethal bronzing (Texas Phoenix Palm Decline / TPPD), ganoderma butt rot, frizzle top (manganese deficiency), and potassium deficiency - the four most common conditions affecting palms in our region.

We trim every palm species commonly grown in our service area - sabal palmetto (Florida's state tree), queen palm, royal palm, coconut palm, Washington fan palm, foxtail palm, Christmas palm, Bismarck palm, and Canary Island date palm - across Jupiter, Tequesta, Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach, Wellington, Stuart, Hobe Sound, Lake Worth Beach, and all of Palm Beach and Martin Counties.

Our Palm Tree Trimming Services Include:

  • Selective frond removal - Only fully brown, hanging, or yellowing fronds are removed. Healthy green fronds are always preserved. Strict adherence to the 9-and-3 rule means we never perform a hurricane or pineapple cut
  • Seed pod & flower stalk removal - Cleanup of inflorescences, dates, coconuts, and dead flower stalks to reduce crown weight, prevent self-seeding, and eliminate falling-fruit hazards over driveways, walkways, and pool decks
  • Trunk skinning & boot cleanup - Careful removal of old leaf bases ('boots') from sabal palmettos and similar species - cleaned up cosmetically without wounding live tissue or creating disease entry points
  • Pre-hurricane palm prep - Targeted cleanup of dead and dangling fronds before tropical storm season - without over-pruning, because over-pruned palms actually fail more often in high winds, not less
  • Palm health & nutrient diagnosis - On-site assessment for lethal bronzing, ganoderma butt rot, frizzle top, and potassium deficiency, plus a science-based fertilization or treatment plan tailored to your species and soil

Palm Tree Trimming - Frequently Asked Questions

Most palms in Palm Beach and Martin Counties only need trimming once or twice per year - typically before hurricane season (May–June) and again at the end of fruiting. Over-trimming a palm causes far more harm than under-trimming. A correctly maintained palm should always look full, not stripped. Healthy green fronds should never be removed - only fully brown or hanging fronds, dead seed pods, and spent flower stalks should be cut.

The 9-and-3 rule is the ISA-recommended industry standard for palm pruning. Imagine the palm crown as a clock face: only fronds at or below the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock horizontal line should be removed. Cutting fronds above that line - the so-called 'hurricane cut' or 'pineapple cut' - starves the palm, weakens the trunk, accelerates nutrient deficiency, and exposes the bud to disease and storm damage. Robert Castleberry follows the 9-and-3 rule on every job, with conservative judgment - often leaving fronds even below the 9-3 line if they're still green.

No. Despite the name, the hurricane cut is one of the most damaging things done to palms in South Florida - and counterintuitively, it makes palms more vulnerable to storms, not less. Removing healthy upright fronds eliminates the canopy needed for photosynthesis, accelerates potassium and manganese deficiency, causes the trunk to taper or 'pencil-point' (a major structural defect), and leaves the apical bud exposed to wind, sun, and pathogens. Properly cleaned palms (only brown fronds removed, healthy green canopy preserved) actually withstand hurricane-force winds better than over-pruned ones. We never perform a hurricane cut.

The four major palm health issues in our area are lethal bronzing (Texas Phoenix Palm Decline / TPPD), a fatal phytoplasma disease spread by planthoppers that affects sabal, Canary Island date, queen, and coconut palms; ganoderma butt rot, a soilborne fungal disease identified by a hard 'conk' near the trunk base; frizzle top, caused by manganese deficiency and showing up as deformed, frizzled new growth; and potassium deficiency, the single most common nutrient issue, causing yellowing and necrotic spots on older fronds. We diagnose all four during every consultation and recommend treatment, fertilization, or removal based on the stage and severity.

The most common palms we trim in our service area are sabal palmetto (Florida's state tree), queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana), coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), royal palm (Roystonea regia), Washington fan palm (Washingtonia robusta), foxtail palm, Christmas palm, Bismarck palm, and Canary Island date palm. Each species has different trimming requirements, growth habits, and disease vulnerabilities - which is why a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work. We tailor every cut to the species in front of us.

Sabal palmetto trunks naturally retain old leaf bases ('boots'). Skinning - removing those boots to expose a smooth trunk - is a purely cosmetic choice. Boots eventually fall off on their own as the palm matures. If skinning is requested, it must be done very carefully so the saw never cuts into living trunk tissue: palms cannot heal wounds the way trees do, and any cut into live tissue becomes a permanent disease entry point. We use proper depth control and only skin when the underlying tissue is mature enough.
